jamie jenkins: listen
caterpillar
(jamie jenkins)
close your eyes for a minute,
i feel a change coming on.
i’ve been a caterpillar for so long,
so now it’s time to be…
a moth!
well at least i’ll have wings,
which is more than i can say
for yesterday.
i was born a pessimist,
which is an extra inch of rubber
in life’s game of bumper cars,
and sometimes it seems like laughter’s
the only dam strong enough
to hold back all the tears.
but still my favorite thing is smiling,
i guess what i mean to say
is i wouldn’t have it any other way.
close your eyes for a minute,
but not one second more.
i lost my window of opportunity again,
and now i’m trying to squeeze in
through an itty-bitty doggy door.
but i don’t really mind,
i guess i’ve come to find
i always seem to get by.
And, no, i don’t always find life this charming;
most times i feel downright defenseless,
but then someone will come
and say my smile is disarming…
so when the battle of laughter impends
i’ll be on the inside track,
with nostrils flared,
and muscles tense,
and once that green flag falls
i aint never looking back.
i’m gonna dance myself right out of this
dizzy little ball we call home.
close your ears for a minute…
no wait,
wait!
i didn’t mean that.
cuz my tongue and my fingertips
both need partners to dance.
it don’t matter if you hop on two left feet,
or if your groove aint quite like mine,
i think we’ll get along
just fine.
close your eyes for a minute,
i feel a change coming on.
i’ve been a caterpillar for so long,
so now it’s time to be a moth.
well thank god i’ll have wings!
i just hope it’s less than i can say
for tomorrow.
