jamie jenkins: listen

fool's disguise

(jamie jenkins)
moonlight
drips through the open window.
a thin coat of white
is painted on the dark canvas of my eyes.
it’s a fool’s disguise,
the brightness of a dying star.
i will drink up all your light
before you’ve realized.

the day our souls collided
heaven burst into flames.
the angels ran ‘round frantically,
wondering who was to blame.
and like a brushfire our friendship grew
‘till it consumed the neighbor’s yard.
now it’s too late to be extinguished.
it’s gone too far.

the slivers of my memory
pierce like broken glass,
reflecting off the pieces
of my fragmented past.
and there you are, like a splinter,
like a thorn inside my heart.
both pain and pleasure when it beats.
i can’t tell them apart.

these veins that pulse within my wrist,
they taunt me every day.
and you’re the only drug i’ve ever found
that takes my pain away.
but to you, my hope, my second half,
there’s nothing i wouldn’t give.
i’ll do more than die for you tonight.
i’ll live.
